Choosing a Nursing Home

Choosing a Nursing Home. Putting your loved one in a suitable and well caring nursing home will not only give you peace of mind but will make your loved one happier.

Choosing a nursing home is not the sort of activity you do in the afternoon. You should start researching well before your loved one needs it. Of course in most cases that doesn’t happen – but nonetheless, don’t rush this process. The following steps will help you plan your course of action.

1.  Determine what sort of care your loved one needs. In general, nursing homes tend to provide four levels of care:

Residential care

Residential care provides supervision in a safe and secure environment.

Personal care

Personal care assistance is for those who need help with basic living activities such as bathing, eating, and getting dressed. CAN’s (certified nursing assistants) usually provide this type of care.

Rehabilitation and Convalescent Nursing care

Convalescent Nursing and rehabilitative care is for those who need medicines administered, those who need help after a stroke or other injury, those who need injections or treatments, those who need various types of therapy, and similar. Generally a licensed practical nurse provides these sorts of services.

Medical care

Medical care facilities’ residents are generally under the care of a doctor who’s responsible for the resident’s care.

Sit down and talk to your loved one about their priorities and what they want and need in a care facility. For example, if they've always lived in a rural area, they may prefer a nursing home in a rural setting. Living close to friends and family is usually important. Perhaps being near the place of worship tops their list. Whatever their priorities are, you need to do your best to make sure their needs are met so that the transition is easier.

Remember, the more you can involve your loved one in choosing a nursing home – then the more in control they will feel and as a result will be much more open to the idea in general.
